Simon’s First Solids

Well, we’ve been a very busy bunch and lots of it happened this morning!

A couple of days ago Simon sat by himself for the very first time.  He’s been spending an awful lot of time lately lying on the floor, lifting his head up and looking (and grunting) at me hopefully.  It usually means he wants to sit up (on my lap), and being propped up on pillows just isn’t good enough.  So I tried him out sitting by himself and was very surprised to find that he sat all by his little self for a whole five seconds!  He’s been getting in regular training sessions since then and this morning he managed to sit for about 30 seconds!  What happened to my little baby?  He’s growing up too fast!

I’ve also found the wonders of eBay.  I hesitate to say this (because I’m worried you’re all going to become my bidding competition), but eBay has proven to be a fantastic source of unusual toys.  So far I’ve bought some Fisher Price Bongos (that play music and light up when you hit them) and an unfortunately named Dora the Explorer “Sit ‘n Spin” for Holly, and yesterday I bought a Jolly Jumper with a stand for Simon.  The “Sit ‘n Spin”, or spinner as we prefer to call it, is a great distraction for Holly and it’s light enough for her to take it wherever she wants.  She’s only fallen off it a couple of times and seems to actually enjoy it when she does go splat.  The Jolly Jumper, which we only picked up this morning, has also proven to be a success.  Simon was smiling and jumping almost instantly after getting hooked up.  The only downside is that Holly keeps trying to swing him while he’s in it.  Fortunately though, Simon now has mobility and can bounce and spin out of her evil clutches.  We just have to watch out for the head donkings whenever Holly tries to get up close to Simon while he’s in it  :)

Oh, and biggest news of all, today Simon had his very first solids.  I remember very clearly giving Holly her first solids - she pulled faces and dribbled everywhere - so I was well prepared.  Simon had a plan though.  He didn’t pull any faces but politely sat there and enjoyed his ultra-bland rice cereal mixed with breast milk… then threw it up… ate some more… threw it up again… then finished off the rest.  He really did seem to enjoy it or, at least, he wasn’t bothered by it.

True to form, Sven was there to take pics of all the events of the day so here are some pics.

Holly’s First Haircut

Hello, hello.  Well, this last week has been packed full.  Holly had her very first haircut, we visited the dentist for Holly’s first official visit (although she has been once before when she only had a few teeth), and we went to the doctor’s for her two-year immunisations.

The haircut went much better than I expected.  We had to get Holly to keep making faces in the mirror so she would keep her head facing forward instead of trying to see what the hairdresser (my friend Lisa) was doing, but other than that it was very uneventful.  She sat still and didn’t complain and seemed to really enjoy it.  I don’t think she was quite so sure about watching me get foils in my head but I can’t blame her, it does look really wierd.  Here are some pics…

 Here’s before:

After (with me looking delightful with my head full of foils):

The dentist visit also went well.  Holly sat on my lap on the dentist’s chair and wore some very attractive sunglasses while her teeth were getting looked at.  When we visited last time we were told her teeth were too white (caused by not brushing after having a bottle before I put her to bed) so I was very happy to hear that her teeth were perfect…  EXCEPT that dentist took one look at her mouth and asked if she was a thumb-sucker.  Apparently we have to get her to quit by the age of 5 for it to not have any long-term effect.

The doctor was another matter.  It’s the first time in all the visits to the doctor that we’ve made that she didn’t want him to come near her and acted all shy when he tried to get near her.  She eventually settled down and had her two-year measurements done but (weehoo!) she didn’t need any injections since she’s on a different immunisation schedule to what they have printed in her health book.  No more until she’s four!  While we were there Simon also had his measurements done.  Turns out Holly and Simon both have head circumferences at the 50th percentile (average).  Holly has a height around the 25th percentile (i.e. short) and weight at the 75th (i.e. portly).  Simon however has both height and weight at the 90th percentile (i.e. HUGE)!  hahahaha :)

Anyway, Holly and I were playing with the webcam again today and we made a little video.  Here it is for your viewing pleasure:

Simon Putting Himself to Sleep

Here’s a little video of Simon that I made this afternoon.  If you have the sound up you can hear his little grunts and sucking sounds as he drifts off to sleep.  What a good boy!

I know it’s not THAT interesting a video but I wanted to try putting something up on YouTube and this was the only one I had for now.  I’m sure there will be more to come!
